Haldane students interviewed as first time voters Young voters may be awakening to their collective power at the ballot box, and they could play a decisive role in choosing the next president this November. |
March 4, 2008 Dear Families, Spring has sprung! Soon the warm weather will be upon us and spring fever will have the potential to set in. As the third quarter comes to a close, it is important for us to keep the students focused on finishing strong. Extra help is offered daily directly from the teachers and the H.E.A.R.T. program runs from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are ample opportunities for the struggling student and the high-performing student alike to improve their grades. Please encourage your son/daughter to take advantage even if it is as simple as a quick review before an exam. I would like to remind you of several important dates that are coming up. Spring sports officially begin on March 10th. March 11th marks the middle of the third quarter, and progress reports will be mailed shortly after that. On March 12th, the guidance department will be conducting a college information meeting for all 11th grade students and their parents. A separate letter was sent with the details. On March 28th, we will be hosting a production of Hamlet by the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Company. On the same day, March 28, the Junior National Honor Society induction will take place. Our own production of the spring musical, The Music Man is scheduled for three shows on the weekend of April 4th. Enclosed you will find a letter from the librarian describing a new item available in the library. Thanks to the generosity of the Haldane School Foundation, we were able to purchase these digital audiobooks for our students. Audiobooks have been shown to supplement and inspire further reading of texts. This is a great way to encourage literacy beyond the classroom. It is scheduling time! At this point Mr. O’Malley is in the process of meeting with 9th graders, and just about every student should have completed their course requests for next year by March 20th. Once all student requests are completed, we will mail home a copy of the courses selected. Please feel free to call with questions or to discuss your son or daughter’s overall academic program. Last week I had the privilege of meeting with Ms. Lisa Roland, a Garrison resident and the area coordinator for the Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency that hosts summer vacations for underprivileged New York City children. She brought to my attention that there is a need for host families in this area. Their mission is consistent with our efforts to provide greater opportunities to our students for diversity and cultural exchange. Please contact her at 845-736-4247 if you are interested in hosting this summer. Once again, as we move toward the end of the school year, it is our hope that the students will continue to improve and reach their personal goals. Please encourage them to seek individual challenges and to take advantage of the many great things that are happening at Haldane! Best wishes, Brian J. Alm
