Jean Marzollo Visits Haldane
Local author Jean Marzollo talked about her books with Haldane Kindergarten students to enrich PARP (parents as Reading Partners). She has written approximately one hundred and twenty- five books including the renowned I Spy books and the Shanna Show books. She told the children that she has always loved to read from the time she was a little girl. She encouraged the children to read and draw whenever they can so that they might have careers as writers or illustrators.
Mrs. Marzollo started her career as a teacher in Boston and she worked as an editor for Let’s Find Out for twenty years. Since then she has been a full time writer. Her latest accomplishment is to illustrate her own books such as Let’s Go, Pegasus! And Little Bear, You’re a Star!Mrs. Marzollo explained how she gets inspiration for her books and how she “test drives” her ideas on local children. The kindergartners loved hearing about how her sons, David and Dan, gave her ideas for many of her books. They were very interested that she wrote a selection of sports themed books for her sons such as Hockey Hero and Basketball Buddies.
Highlights of Jean’s power point presentation were the images of how Walter Wick creates the amazing images for her I Spy books. She challenged the children to try to figure out how the photographs were made and then shared some of Mr. Wick’s photography tricks with them.
The children (and adults) were mesmerized by Mrs. Marzollo’s informative presentation. Following the lecture numerous children stated that the wanted to be writers or illustrators when they grow up.
The Haldane PTA organized Jean Marzollo’s visit.
